For 34 years, the eatery has served up its annual free Thanksgiving dinner for active duty military, who enjoy smoked turkey dinner buffet served with all the fixings. Kansas City Barbeque is a proud supporter of the men and women serving in the armed forces and features daily specials, friendly service and memorabilia that make everyone feel right at home. Also, a juke box pumps out a good combination of oldies and goodies mixed with newer songs. Also remarkable is the restaurant’s “shrine,” a motley collection of license plates, military hats and more. Visit the bar and take home a “Top Gun” tank top, t-shirt, or hat! Postcards are also available. “Top Gun” fans will appreciate the decor. Happy Hour runs every day from 3:30-6:30 p.m. Lunch is served daily from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Aside from its tasty ribs, the place also serves sandwiches, chicken and beef, and delicious side dishes including cole slaw, beans, fries, to-die-for onion rings, potato salad, corn on the cob, and macaroni and cheese. Small wonder this landmark continues to be voted by locals as the best downtown barbecue restaurant. Most patrons enjoy sitting outside on the expansive patio, taking in amazing downtown views and demolishing racks of ribs. The restaurant carries pictures and actual props from the film, including the piano used in a scene in which Goose and Maverick (played by Anthony Edwards and Tom Cruise, respectively) belt out “Great Balls of Fire.” Home to the 1986 hit movie “Top Gun,” this San Diego landmark celebrated the blockbuster’s 30th anniversary recently- as well as it own 39th birthday (having opened in 1983) - in May.
